Colours are a matter of sensations, feelings, memories, and logical connections.
Even if not always directly, human beings are aware of the presence of colour codes that are used in everyday situations. Therefore, there is an agreement on the correct use of traffic lights, road signs and so on. Colours are always influenced by context, but personal and emotional thoughts tend to predominate when it comes to the way people speak and imagine colours.
This thesis delves into the complex and fascinating topic of colour naming. It explores how people name colours by studying the contexts in which they use colour terms and analysing how these situations may affect the linguistic definition of colours.
